Diuretics are the medicines used to work in the kidney to increase urine flow leading to decrease in the extracellular fluid volume.

In this way diuretics are used for treatment of various disorders associated with such ionic balance as heart failure & hypertension.

There are the categories of medicines used as diuretics:

  • Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
  • Potassium Sparing Diuretics
  • Loop Diuretics
  • Thiazide Diuretics
  • Osmotic Diuretics

Out of these in detail the Osmotic diuretics:

Osmotic diuretics like mannitol are filtered from the blood into the nephron.

Once in the nephron, they never are reabsorbed into the body. These diuretics draw the water into the nephron and resulting the out of the body.
