The characteristics are different for both methods, but the importance for evaluating the designs these are inevitable.

Quantitative research characteristics which should consider for appraisal evaluation are, 1. Identify the steps of research process 2. Determine the strengths and weaknesses of the study 3. Evaluate the credibility and meaning of study finding.

In case of qualitative research 1. Key concepts 2. References 3. Learning outcomes.

The important thing should consider while appraisal of a research is evaluation of outcome and it's credibility in both cases
