What are the specific limitations for the LVN regarding practice?
LVN , Licensed Vocational Nurse or licensed practical nurse complete one year licence practice certification program and directly supervised by doctors or register nurses. They mainly work in clinics, nursing homes and other healthcare institutions. They do the basic nursing care.
LVN's duty varies from state to state. They cannot assess, diagnose or evaluate the disease process as it will be done by the doctors or nurses. Some states allow them to do only basic patient care which reduces the productivity of the worker. On the otherhand, some states allow them to administer medication with the supervision of doctors or RN's. Hence, many institutions prefer RN than LVN. Besides, there are other procedures an LVN cannot perform and they are taking verbal orders, administering blood product, pronouncing time of death, flushing PICC lines, chemo drug administration,IV therapy.
