It is used in patients with Gastrointestinal obstructions.
Nasogastric suctioning cause the removal of HCl from stomach leading to metabolic alkalosis (pH more than 7.35 and HCO3 more than 28 mEq /L).
Solutions to control metabolic alkalosis are
replace GI losses, monitor intake and output and electrolytes.
