A PhD student had a needlestick injury while drawing blood from an AIDS and syphilis patient subject. Initial lab tests on the student serum were both negative. Explain why the student can still be infected even though her lab tests were negative. How should her health care be monitored?
As she get her lab test negative ,there is chance of to be
infected with HIV .
*Incubation period for HIV antibody is about 1-3 months .After
infection ,it takes 1- 3 months for her body to produce enough of
these antibodies for a test to accurately detect them.
HIV RNA can be detected in blood stream 9-11 days after
infection, but it is more sensitivethan HIV antibody test.
*Syphilis is transmitted through oral, vaginal and anal sex.how ever
syphilis is transmitted through infected blood also.
incubation period for syphilis is 3-6 weeks.it ranges from 10 days
to 3 months .
**So she should be monitored for 3 months with regular lab
tests.
HIV therapy must be begin as soon as after the injury and continued
for four weeks.
for syphilis single dose of benzathine penicillin should be
administered.
