WHY IS INSULIN IMPORTANT TO A PATIENT:
Insulin is very important when it comes to patient with diabetes mellitus which is deficiency or absence of insulin or, rarely impairment of insulin resistance.
Insulin is a polypeptide consisting of about 50 amino acids. Its main function is to lower the blood nutrient levels not only glucose but also amino acids and fatty acids. These effects are called as anabolic, which is when they promote storage of nutrients.
When these nutrients especially glucose, are in excess of immediate needs insulin promotes their storage by acting on cell membranes and stimulating uptake and use of glucose by muscle and connective tissue cells, actively converting the glucose to glycogen.
