Mrs. R is an elderly Caucasian woman admitted to your unit last night from the emergency department. She was admitted with fever, headache and cough. She was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia 6 months ago and has been receiving treatment at the outpatient oncology center. A CBC and blood cultures were drawn prior to transferring her to the med-surg. unit.
The night shift reports to you that Mrs. R has been sleeping without complaint most of the night. Her vital signs “were stable” and the cultures drawn in the ED have not returned.
