A client is interested in using an IUD. Which finding from the health history should the RN bring to the attention of the health care provider?
Intrauterine device (IUD) is a small object that is inserted into the uterine cavity for the purpose of birth control. The IUDs with copper prevent pregnancy by interfering with the fertilization of the ovum and its implantation. This device can also induce inflammation of the uterine tissues. An IUD with copper can prevent the pregnancy for up to 10 years. An IUD with levonorgestrel can prevent the pregnancy for up to 5 years.
The IUD is inserted by the physician, but it can spontaneously be expelled out and produce severe menstrual bleeding.
The RN has to report the physician if the patient has breast cancer or serious liver disease. This is important because the IUD’s with hormones worsen the breast cancer, and liver is needed for metabolizing the hormones.
