As a nurse practitioner how would you handle a situation where a patient with URI symptoms clearly viral in nature, states, “I need a Z-pack to help me get over this cold”.

In upper respiratory tract infections (viral), z-pack can't prescribe.Because antibiotics don't work against virus.it is using to treat bacterial infections.

As a nurse practitioner, following measures have to taken

  • Advice the patient to drink plenty of fluids
  • Take proper rest
  • Adjust the room temperature and humidity
  • Soothe your throat
  • Use saline nasal drops
  • Advice for steam inhalation
  • Prescribe analgesics like Acetaminophen and NSAID's to treat fever,aches etc.
