What is the principle of Optochin?

Ethylhydrocupreine hydrochloride, a chemical name of Optochin - water soluble, used for the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae which is alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus susceptible to it. Other species are resistant to optochinl.

This test uses diffusion principle and it is performed in a blood agar medium. A positive identification of streptococcus pneumoniae by showing a impregnated disk surrounded with lysed optochin due to changes in surface tension.
