Scurvy is a disease results from lack of vitamin C i.e ascorbic acid . In this bleeding from gums is common , changes in hair is also seen, poor wound healing , recurrent infection is common . The people who are alcoholic , suffering from mental disorder , old people are at risk.
During age of sail 50%of sailors die from the scurvy on a given trip. Main source is vitamin C to prevent scurvy .ie present in citrus fruits . Such as tomatoes .
Too much cooking of food can decreases the vitamin C in food. Half a pint of sea water a day can also decreases bleeding , or nutmeg size paste of garlic , mustard seed , or use of vinegar two spoonfuls can also prevents., Lemons , oranges is also useful.
Serving fesh lime juice and fresh meat or bear liver in ship can also help in preventing scurvy.
