Joan had her thyroid removed because it developed a large tumor. Her doctor prescribed thyroxine medication as well as calcium supplements.

Joan must have to take calcium supplements after thyroidectomy(Complete removal of the thyroid) because hypocalcemia(low calcium level) is very common after this surgery. It mainly occurs due to a decrease in parathyroid hormones related to thyroid removal.

So, to avoid symptoms and complications of hypocalcemia Joan should take calcium supplements with thyroxine medication.
