Metabolic alkalosis:-
It occurs when blood becomes alkaline due to a metabolic cause(bicarbonate abnormality). In this case, the blood becomes higher than 7.35, bicarbonate label is higher than 28.
Underlying diagnosis related to metabolic alkalosis
Metabolic alkalosis mainly occurs due to the increased level of serum bicarbonate in the body, bicarbonate mainly increase in body due to
- excessive acid loss(excessive loss of hydrogen ion)
- excessive diuretics use(retention of bicarbonate by the kidney)
- low potassium level in the body(hypokalemia cause shift of hydrogen ion from extracellular fluid to intracellular fluid)
- excessive bicarbonate ingestion
- excess use of antacids(magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide uses)
- excessive vomiting(due to excessive vomiting there is loss of gastric juice which causes alkalosis)
