Post op care of colostomy
- Clean the stoma with saline
- Use right size pouch and skin barrier opening
- Change pouch regularly
- Watch for sensitivity and allegy
- Be careful while pulling out pouch, change pouch once a day if
no other issues.
- Shave off extra body hair around stoma
- Wear loose dress and avoid knots over and around stoma.
- Watch fpr complications lile bleeding, blockage,
cramps,etc
Patient education
- educate about the expected outcomes like mild swelling and
redness
- Educate how and when to change stoma bag
- Educate how to keep the area clean
- Educate the foods that to be avoided like excessive spicy and
gas forming foods
- Report for complicatios lile obstruction, bleeding and
cramps.

Post operative interventions to avoid pneumonia
- Early ambulation
- Keep mouth and teeth clean to prevent micoorganism entering to
lungs
- Use incentive spirometer
- Deep breathing and coughing exercises.
- Keep head end of bed elevated to 30 degree.
- In unconscious patient do oral suction regularly
- Prevent aspiration.

- Thirst
- Dark urine
- Low urine output
- Changes in mental state and awareness
- Dizziness
- Dry skin and mucus membrane
- Weight loss in severe defecit
- Loss of skin turgour and elasticity

Early signs
- Restlessness
- Anxiety
- Confusion
- Tachyponea
- Dyspnea
- Low blood saturation
Late signs
- Hypotension
- Change in skin colour
- Loss of consciousness
- Cyanosis
- Changes in skin temperature
