Why does hypercapnia in chronic respiratory diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis result to respiratory acidosis?
Hypercapnia means High levels of CO2 in blood
It's also called Co2 retention.
Chronic airway diseases are the ones that block airflow and makes
it difficult to breathe. When it becomes difficult to breathe it
increases the level or carbon dioxide in the blood. Thus it results
in Hyper capnia.
There will be less removal of co2 from the body and increased
intake, it might lead to impairment of ventilation it makes the
normal acid base balance towards acidic and it results in
respirayory acidosis.₹
