Ricky Roberts, 2 years old, is brought to the emergency room by his parents and is actively having seizures. His mother tells the nurse that Ricky was diagnosed with epilepsy 6 months ago and that he has been having one seizure after another for the past 40 minutes. The mother states that Ricky has not regained consciousness in between seizures. (Learning Objective 4)
1.As the child is unconscious and having seizures continuously as a nurse immediately we should check for the airway clearance as it is really important to keep the airway patent as the child is only 2 yrs old and can go into respiratory distress. Then we need to check for any injuries.
2.Percautions to be taken to ensure child safety includes, we should put the child on a bed with side railing. Should not attempt to restrain the child during seizure. Make the child lay down with his head turned sideway to prevent airway blockage and clear airway if needed. Loosen the clothing of the child. We should teach parents how to use waring signs appropriately and how to take care of the child during and after seizure attack
