How to introduce a music instrument to children?
Music is an art form , created by organizing sounds , pitch , rhythm and sounds made using musical instruments and / or singing. A musical instrument is a device that generates or plays music . The common musical instruments are guitar, drum , piano, saxophone, flute, accordian , concertina , violin, xylophone, trumpet etc. Children are naturally the music lovers. It is said that even the unborn babies love music or they can hear the music and it will have a pleasnt effect on them. It is desirable to introduce the musical instrument or instruments to child as learning to play music instruments have many advantages over their growth and development such as:
* it can improve their fine motor skills .
* it encourages brain development.
* It improves their academic performance
* It increases their self esteem
* It increases their skills in handling different instruments and devices.
* helps to cultivate socialization
As curious learners, young children may learn any music instrument in their young age , if they are interested in it. If the music or the musical instruments presented in an appealed manner, at the early age, then the interest towards music may arise in child. Some of the tips for introducing the musical instrument/ instruments to the child ;
* expose to the music at an early age : Expose the young children to music and the parents can add foot tapping, clapping, or dancing along with the music. By hearing the different type of music and seeing the movements , suitable for the music, the child may get interested in different form of music and they may learn to identify the type of music.
* Use daily using objects to generate music
Use the every objects found at home and classroom , to make music like tapping in a rhythmic manner and the children may be curious to explore more objects and they may try to generate the music .
* Make own music instruments: Guardian or parents together with child, try to make a music instrument. Example: make a music box with empty cardboard box with a middle opening and rubber bands, or 5 - 6 steel glasses filled with different amount of water and two spoons or forks to beat them in a rhythmic way.
* Introduce the child to the real music instrument: Once the child shows interest in music , the parents can buy a real music instrument , that is suitable for the child's age , and present to them . Let them feel, touch play , and interact with it. Before giving it , it is better the parent can learn some simple rhythms to play for the child. So that the child may become more interested. For example: Teach or demonstrate to the child how to play " happy Birthday to you, Happy ...".
* Colouring books contains the picture of musical instruments: Buy and give them the colouring books , contains the musical instrument pictures. So that the child can fill the colours for it and ask them which one they like more. Also ask the child to make the sounds of the particular instrument, when he/ she colour it.
* Teach them simple rhythms first: Don't go for complex rhythms at the early stage. Teach the child simple rhythm, tunes and lines. Don't judge them or criticise them over their performance at the early stages. It may reduce their interest and self esteem, instead motivate and encourage them.
