t is a beautiful Indian Summer fall Saturday evening in September. The barbeque pit is lit and the coals are warming and ready for those tasty burgers you are cooking for supper. The phone rings just as you are about to put the burgers on the fire. It’s work! You are requested to report immediately to El Centro Medical Center. There has been a horrific airplane crash at DFW. Two planes were involved. One plane was taking off and the other landing. The impossible happened. They collided into each other just as each was a few yards off of the runway. There are approximately 500 passengers plus the crews. Smoke covers the scene, not a good sign. Emergency workers are on the scene trying to get survivors transported and triaged. You are working at one of the receiving hospitals

. Assume the role of the pathology laboratory manager what should you do should this manager do to prepare their hospital staff to receive the injured? Be specific as to the role of the employees

The survivors continue to arrive for 4 hours and need to be received and triaged for an additional 12 hours. How will you attend everyone ?

How would you as a manager handle the press, the government groups, and the families? What type of help will you solicit from other hospital departments/divisions?

Pathology laboratory manager : Who works in a managerial area responsible for scheduling staffs, rendering supplies and maintaining security standards, they helps the scientist or other hospital department, how to carryout risk assessment and an appropriate control measures.

As here an emergency where two aeroplane gets collisioned and above 500 passengers were injured or death which not confirmed.

Triage : Triage are should be ready to receive the patients and category their needs.

1-those who needs immediately life saving interventions

2-those who needs significant interventions that can be delayed

3- those needing little or no treatment

4-those who are severely ill or major complications.

Color codings :

Black : expectant :pain medication only, until death

Red : immediate :life threatening injuries

Yellow :delayed : non-life threatening injuries

Green :minimal : minor injuries.

Manager duties : keep ready for emergency department for receiving and assessing needs of patients .

Inform ICU, OT ,OGD(if any gynec patients) , CCU(for cardiac patients) , Dialysis ( those who are on dialysis) for emergency procedures.

Hospital departments :

*Reception : Inform that such situation has happened and emergency calls expecting and press or any government staffs may call.

*Emergency department Nurses : Inform that patients arriving for 4 hours and next 12 hours triage will continue, arrange for staff requirements.

* X-ray and Lab : Inform to ready for massive investigations that going to happen in next hours and arrange staffs (if anyone on leave) for immediate investigations.

( Arrange an separate area for all injured patients, if available)  

*Inform nearest police station

*Press :Inform press that we receiving the patients for taking care and inform the conditions of patients in common.

*Government : Inform the government that how may are critically ill and death details, injured, minimally injured etc..

* Families : As in an panic situation where all the family will be in hospital area, Inform them the correct details and allocate a place for them to wait.

Other Hospital departments : All departments in the hospital should work simultaneously in order to get the proper care and treatment, educate all the staffs in hospital about disaster management and seeks helps from everyone. Once triage done all hospital departments work together without any bias.
