How do Low Density Lipoprotein and High Density Lipoprotein are influenced by Keto diet?

*I need two answers (for LDL and for HDL)

Answer #1

Keto diet refers to food that is rich in fats ,contains moderate amounts of protein and minimal amounts of carbohydrate.

Studies have shown that keto diet can influence the lipid panel.

Effect on Low Density Lipoprotein(LDL)

  • Increases the LDL particle size, which decreases the risk for oxidative stress.
  • Though it does not lower the levels of total LDL,it converts the small, dense LDL to large, buoyant LDL which in turn reduces the adverse cardiovascular effects of LDL cholesterol.
  • Hence, the overall effect of keto diet is to optimize the LDL levels.

Effect on High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)

  • Healthy fats obtained from a keto diet can increase the levels of HDL cholesterol or 'good cholesterol'.
  • Increased levels of HDL lowers the LDL to HDL ratio, which is an indicator of good health.
  • Hence,a low carb diet(less than 50g) is a more effective method than a traditional low-fat diet for increasing HDL levels.

NB:Though this is the general concept, some studies have shown that long-term use of keto diet can decrease the levels of HDL and increase LDL.So,keto diet may not be appropriate for everyone and should be chosen wisely.

Q1-Q7. One type of cholesterol is called low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL, also called the “bad” cholesterol). Adults should check their cholesterol levels at least every 5 years. The lower the LDL cholesterol is, the healthier the person is. Suppose the LDL cholesterol scores in men follow a normal distribution N(µ = 140, σ = 32). 1. If an LDL level below 160 is considered as acceptable, what percent of men have an acceptable cholesterol level? Note the answer field below...

Drug X has just received FDA approval for lowering the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in adults. You would like to design a clinical trial to see whether the new drug is effective in your pediatric population. To gather some preliminary evidence, you have measured the LDL-C in children who have been treated with drug X at baseline and after 3 months of therapy and observed the data to be normally distributed. You next objective is to compare the baseline LDL-C...
