Inter-professional education (IPE) and co-operative practice (IPP) are essential to providing high-quality patient care. PEI / ICP leadership requires training in new knowledge and skills that most teachers and clinicians in the health professions lack. To guide this training, Interprofessional Collaborative Education (IPEC) identified interprofessional cooperation fromAcross four core competencies: (a) values / ethics for practicing the profession, (b) roles / responsibilities, (c) inter-professional communication, and effective IPE / ICP, it is necessary to define new educational paradigms that provide an operational framework for these skills. The University of Virginia's ASPIRE (UVA) model is a new model for developing IPE / ICP educational experiences. It was created by mapping competencies for the International Program on the Elimination of Child Labor in three overlapping areas of program content: (a) practical tools, (b) leadership, and (c) relationship factors. This model illustrates the relationship between the four core competencies of the International Program on the Elimination of Child Labor and the corresponding sub-competencies data and their inclusion in one or more of these three program content areas.The ASPIRE UVA model has been pilot tested as an approach to providing IPE / ICP training through a "real world" application to clinicians and faculty participating in an intensive team development program. Positive assessments and learners' enhanced abilities to apply their new knowledge and skills to solve real clinical challenges revealed that the UVA ASPIRE model is an effective approach to integrate IPEC skills into the design of IPE / ICP educational activities.
