Postpartum depression often begins early as 4 weeks after birth. In some cases it may occur any time within the first year after childbirth. It is a non phychotic major depression disorder. According to Beck , depression is like an earthquake, which can erupt when pressure increase at already highly stressed point of the system. Beck's program of research on PPD represent a significant contribution to Nursing practice knowledge through mid-range theory development, which later advances the discipline of nursing. In Beck's postpartum depression predictory inventory,she list woman at risk of developing PPD where the theory can also be applied. These factors includes, prenatal depression , prenatal anxiety, history of previous depression, social support ,life stress, Children stress, etc.Post partum depression theory is used in clinical settings.
