You are caring for a patient who has an order for metoprolol (Lopressor) IV at 10 mg/hr. You have a bag of metoprolol (Lopressor) labeled 200 mg in 250 mL 0.9% NS. Determine the rate in mL/hr that you will set this pump. Round your answer to the nearest tenth place.

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • Order for metoprolol = 10 mg/ hr
  • Available bag of metoprolol is 200 mg in 250 mL 0.9 % NS.
  • Rate to be set in mL/hr =?
  • We can take the rate in mL / hr as "X".
  • The formula is,
  • What we want (dose ordered ) in mg ÷ what we have ( available dose) in mg = what we want in mL ÷ what we have in mL
  • 10mg÷ 200mg = X (mL) ÷ 250mL
  • X (mL) × 200mg =10mg ×250 mL
  • X = 2500÷ 200 = 12.5 mL/hr
  • Therefore, you have to set 12.5 mL/hr in the infusion pump or we can round off it to 13 mL/hr
