ill in all the missing values. A fictitious study investigates the incidence rate of lung cancer in people who have been exposed to asbestos. Occupational therapists/physicians believe that occupational inhalation exposure to asbestos fibers causes scarring of lung tissue which leads to a unique form of cancer called mesothelioma. They run a case-control study to test the association. They recruit a total of 1,298 people between the ages of 35 and 85 years old to be in the study. 1,150 people were negative for mesothelioma and the rest were cases. Of all the people who were exposed to asbestos in their workplace, 145 of them developed mesothelioma. 153 people were never exposed to asbestos occupationally. (Tip: fill in the numbers you are given first and then do additions and subtractions to fill in the missing values. Do not use commas in numbers) Mesothelioma No Mesothelioma Total Asbestos exposure No asbestos exposure Total

Answer #1

Make a 2×2 table. On the upper left, write Diseased (mesothelioma) and upper right, write Not Diseased. Now on left side of the table, first point is Exposed (asbestos) and below that not exposed. Total control is 1150,total populaion is 1298.So cases are (1298-1150) ie 148.Now, on upper left, write the number of people diseased with exposure to asbestos ie 145,below that(lower left of table) write (148-145) =3 ie no of diseased people who have no exposure history. Now 153 people never exposed to asbestos(write under total in lower right). So,no of control people not exposed to asbestos is (153-3) ie 150,write on the lower right. Now, on upper right, write (1298-150) ie 1148 which are the number of controls exposed to asbestos. Write the totals on each sides.
