  1. The provider orders Zovirax 5 mg/kg IVPB in 100 mL D5W in 60 min. The patient weighs 70 kg. The pharmacy sends Zovirax 500 mg dry powder. The directions state to reconstitute with 10 mL of sterile water to yield 50 mg/mL.
    1. How many mL should be added to the IV bag?
  1. If the drop factor for the tubing is 60 gtt/mL. What should the flow rate be in gtt/min?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a. If 5mg/ml is mixed in 100ml D5W

How much should 50mg/ml should be mixed.

5mg/ml - - - - - - - - - 100ml

50mg/ml - - - - - - - - x

X=(50mg/ml × 100 ml )÷ 5mg/ml

=1000ml

Hence 1000ml is required to be added in the bag.

B.

To find time for 1000 ml

100ml was given for 1h so

1000ml was given for x hrs

100ml - - - - - - - - 1h

1000ml - - - - - - - x

X= (1×1000) ÷ 100

=10 hrs

Formula in gtt/ml for flow rate is

=(volume/time(in hours) ) × drop factor

=(1000 ml /10h ×60 )(since 10hrs times 60min/hr) ×60

=(1000/10 ×60) ×60

=100 ml/hr
