expalin why radiopharmaceutical cannot be used interchangeably with other contrast agents in medical imaging

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Radiopharmaceutical are a group of drug which is used as a contrast agent for diagnostic purpose especially for imaging. This particular radiopharmaceutical cannot be used in exchange of other radiological contrast agent in medical imaging. Some of the reasons for not using this in the as a replacement are

  • It can absorb or alter the electromagnetic field and give a wrong reading
  • The risk of having adverse reactions
  • The risk of radiation exposure
  • Preparation time can be more and not practically applicable for routine medical imaging on daily practice
  • The cost of expense for use of radiopharmaceutical is high compared to other contrast agents.

Barium sulfate, BaSO4, is used in medical imaging of the gastrointestinal tract because it is opaque to X rays. A barium sulfate solution, sometimes called a cocktail, is ingested by the patient, whose stomach and intestines can then be visualized via X-ray imaging. If a patient ingests 200 mL of a saturated barium sulfate solution, how much toxic Ba2+ ion has the patient consumed? The solubility product Ksp of BaSO4 is 1.10×10−10. The ultrasonic transducer used in a medical ultrasound imaging device is a very thin disk (m = 0.10 g) driven back and forth in SHM at 1.0 MHz by an electromagnetic coil. a. The maximum restoring force that can be applied to the disk without breaking it is 50,000 N. What is the maximum oscillation amplitude that won't rupture the disk? b. What is the disk's maximum speed at this amplitude?
