Signs and symptoms of parasympathetic suppression in CNS :
- Agitation and restlessness,
- Delerium,
- Hallucinations,
- Drowsiness and eventually coma,
- Convulsions,
- Amnesia,
- Blurred vision, pupil dilation, photophobia,
- Weakness,
- Dizziness,
- Insomnia.
Drugs causing parasympathetic suppression in CNS:
- Antimuscarinic drugs like Atropine and scopolamine.
- Antiparkinson drugs like Trihexyphenidyl.
- Tricyclic antidepressants like Amitriptyline.
- Antihistamines.
Nursing Interventions :
- Asess neurological status of the patient such as sensorium, pupil and reflexes.
- Asess for hypoglycemia in patients with altered mental status.
- manage seizures with benzodiazepines.
- Patients with altered mental status may require intubation with cuffed endotracheal tube to prevent aspiration pneumonia.
- Treat agitation with physostigmine or benzodiazepines.
- monitor and treat arrythmias.
