End-of-life care becomes an issue at some point for elderly clients. Even with the emergence of palliative care programs and hospice programs, the majority of elderly people do not die in their own home as is their preference. What are the reasons for this trend? Discuss what you can do as a nurse to support your clients in end-of-life care and in supporting their desires. Support your response with evidence-based literature.
Demographics explain some of the huge variations recorded in the incidences of death at home or in hospital. For example, areas having high rates of death from diseases such as the heart and respiratory diseases the hospital care in the final days of life may be appropriate. As a nurse to support my client's desires in end-of-life care; I will try to become a nurse advocate, (Hebert, 2011). The power of advocacy may remove barriers to achieve the patient's desired outcomes at the end of life.
