Although nosocomial bacteremias only account for a small proportion of HAIs (~5%) why are they so important to health care workers such as doctors and nurses and to patients?
nosocomial bacteremia is a hospital acquired infection caused by gram negative bacteremia after 48 hours of hospital admission. bacteremia is declared if the presence of bacteria is confirmed in at least one hemoculture. this occurs in patients treated in intensive care units. this occurs as a result of resistance to treatment with antibiotics. it is important for the health care workers and patients as these infections causes increased or lengthy stay of patients in the intensive care units, poor health oucomes and increased mortality rates which can decrease the truct of patients and family over the health care system. this is an emerging global health concern which has not been solved till date.
