A 500 mL IV is set to infuse at 60 mL/hr using 20 gtt/mL tubing. The IV was started at 1000.

a. Calculate the completion time for this IV. State answer in both standard time and military time.

b. Calculate the original gtt/min rate.

c. After 4 hours, you notice that 150 mL of IV solution is left in the bag. Recalculate the rate in gtt/min for the remaining solution to finish on time.

d. Determine the percentage of change in the IV rates and state your course of action. Explain.

Answer #1

Total volume of solution is 500ml

Flow rate is 60ml/hr

Drop factor is 20gtt/ml

IV started at 10.00

a) The completion time will be after 8hrs 20min .

Standard time = 06.20pm

Military time = 1820

b) gtt /min = Total volume /total time × drop factor

= 500ml / 8hr20min × 20gtt/ml

= 500ml/ 500min × 20gtt/ml

= 20gtt/min

c) After 4hrs ,

Total volume -150ml

Total time left is 4hr 20min

Drop factor -20gtt/ml

gtt /min = 150ml/ 260min × 20gtt/ml

= 11.5gtt/min

d) Percentage of changes = 20gtt/min - 11.5gtt/min ÷ 100

= 0.085%
