Tuskegee experiment. Most people's initial reaction to the Tuskegee experiment is to ask how it could have happened? What do you think? Given today’s laws of informed consent, could it happen again? Why do you feel that way? How does the Tuskegee study differ from today’s research studies for HIV and AIDS?
the research involved 600 patients with and without syphilis which lasted for about 40 years. the particpants were told that they were treated for black blood. no informed consent was taken and the patients werenot provided treatment. they were not provided with any information on disease and treatment.
in today's world, if any one is involved in research, it is the sole responsbility of the researcher to explain the purpose of research, treatment if any involved, and get informed consent from patients and not to cause any harm for them. the research on hiv/aids focus on knowledge building and gap filling, evidence based programs that is based on effective interventionsand protection of vulnerable groups such as women and children in treatment and away from violence.
