Harry, a 30-year-old male in good physical condition had a routine physical test for life insurance. CBC: Hb 15 g/dL, Hct 47%, RBC count 5.2 × 1012/L Platelet count 175 × 109/L, WBC 12 × 109/L
1- Consider how you would explain these results in a healthy male.
2- Are any of these results outside the reference range? If so, which one(s)?
3- If this were a newborn, would you change your evaluation? Why?
4- A WBC differential was performed: Neutrophils 58% Lymphocytes 32% Monocytes 6% Eosinophils 3% Basophils 1%
5- Are any of the WBC concentrations outside the reference interval (relative or absolute)? 6- Is there a need for reflex testing? Explain your answer.
Que1. Complete blood count is a test that counts the cells that make our blood , RNC , WBC , PLATELETS COUNT .
Its done diagnose any abnormalities in body like anemia ( low hb , hct or LOW RBC ) , infection (WBC raise ) , therapeutic effect of medication , during chemotherapy , keep eye on blood condition.
Healthy men must have their CBC values in reference range.
TEST. REFERENCE VALUE
1. RBC. 3.90-5.6 10*12 /L
2.HGB . 14-17.4 g / L
6.PLT . 150--400)× 10 *9 g/L
7 .WBC . 4.20- 10.80)× 10 * 9 g/L
Que 2. Yes , one these is out of range that is WBC normal range is 4.20-10.80)×10*9g/L, but patient vale is 12 × 10*9 g /L .
It represents the infection in body
Que 3. Yes , we have to change our evaluation because new born have different range of cells in body because of body requirements . Newborn are have undeveloped organs so their reference values will be different from adult. Like high HGB because lungs are underdeveloped .
Que 4. No, all value are in reference range.
Neutrophils = 55-70%
Eosinophils = 1-3%
Basophils = 0.5-1%
Monocytes =. 3%-8%
So, there is no elevation in blood value of the patient.
Qué 5.. Yes , there is need of reflex testing , performed as a part of the neurological examination asas to perform the spinal cord injury or any neurological disorders , because there is increased count of WBC which . Represent the infection in body ,so we need to do test , whether infection has spread to the brain or spinal cord .
