During inspection of a patient's abdomen, you note that the abdominal contour is round and distended with no masses present. The last bowel movement was one hour ago and the stool was loose. The patient reports abdominal pain to be below the umbilicus and sharp in quality. After inspection of the abdomen, you will:
Perform light palpation of the abdomen follow by deep palpation |
||
Auscultate for bowel sounds in the right lower quadrant |
||
Percuss the abdomen |
||
Palpate for bruits and rebound tenderness |
Normally when we assess our body ,nurse will perform - 1) Inspection , 2) palpation 3) percussion 4) Auscultation
But it is different with Abdomen and therefore assessment will be performed as -
1) Inspection ,2) Auscultation 3) Palpation 4) Percussion
So according to given scenario , inspection is done and now auscultation is to be done thus correct option is B
It is not case with abdomen as with other part because abdomen contains gastric content and on palpation and percussion we push the gastric contents due to which Bowel sound can alter which normally isn't present . To avoid this Auscultation is to be done before touching the abdomen as in Auscultation bowel sound and vascular sound for bruits can be listened
So answer is -Auscultate for bowel sounds in the right lower quadrant.
