Case Situation: Workplace Violence in the Nurses Station

Carlo is a newly-hired staff nurse at King Fahd Hospital of the University (KFHU). He is assigned in the Male Medical Ward, which is situated in the 3rdfloor. Carlo had been in the area for less than six (6) months. Despite of being the newest addition to the roster of staff nurses in the ward, he was handling the most difficult cases in the area and increase number of patients per shift compared to other staff nurses on duty. Carlo never complained of the situation. Instead, he decided to keep silent and continue what he is doing.

One day, Carlo had an argument with Marvin, his senior staff nurse on duty, about Carlo being the favorite of their unit manager and supervisors because he often gets good working schedules and been receiving a lot of excellent feedback from both the nurse managers and patients. After their confrontation, Marvin started creating malicious and negative issues towards Carlo. Since the staff nurses were convinced of Marvin’s wrong accusations and comments, they have started to dislike Carlo and been throwing unnecessary comments and jokes about him up to the point that Carlo had been the subject of their laughing stock verbally and through their social networking account like Facebook and Twitter.

Carlo was outcasted every shift. He was alone all the time and started to be demotivated about his work. In 2 weeks’ time, Carlo had been absent five (5) times and been late most of the time, which is very unusual to him because he is known to be the early bird among the staff nurses in the ward. After a month, Carlo submitted a letter to the unit manager asking for a transfer of area or if not he will just resign from the hospital.

If you are the unit manager of the Male Medical Ward, how would you respond with this kind of issue of workplace violence particularly with nurse bullying?

Answer #1

Answer to 1st question:

in this case, Carlo has been doing great job providing quality of care with effeciency to patients and Marvin gets jelous and cannot stand that Carlo getting good feedback and appreciation from manager. So Marvin started conflict with Carlo wothout logic and made him bad by creating negative issues and made entire staff in the hospital abuse him verbally. It created lots of stress on Carol and disturb him mentally and he had lost interest in his work responsibilities. The main problem is when carol is abusing by his senior nurse staff and cannot make complaint of workplace violance to manager or donot have proper communication with manager and took lots of stress and he cannot deal with it by himself in the end.

--Carol also should have conversation with manager about his heavy workload and share them with his senior nurse staff and can create positive work environment.

Answer to 2nd question:

The resolving the issue or workplace violance in the hospitals is the best way to create the environment in which everyone can work effeciently. The information needed to resolve the conflict happen in the Carlo case is having proper communication with the senior nurse , Marvin and make him to understand the situation from Carlo's perception and ask him to help and share the work with him to work effeciently and can resolve that conflict.

--If it doesnot work, then Carlo should make a complaint to manager and investigate the issue and then authority have full chance to creat postive work environment by resolving this issue by repositioning his job or terminating the his job in the workplace. The other work staff who abused him verbally also should confirm the story by communicating with Carol and then take a decision but not listening and understanding results in misunderstanding and causes violance in workplace and also affects in providing quality of care to patients.

--In the hospitals the authority should place a rule like preventing workplace violance rule that can increase awareness in staff to not abuse the new staff and if have problem , must have communication or can complaint to manager. The rule of paying money as penalty for abusing verbally must be placed and nurses should get trained by managers to not have conflicts.

Answer to 3rd question:

The factors involed in this case to solve the conflict issues in the nursing workplace is the nursing station doesnot have the workplace violance prevention procedures so Carol didnot take any action due to the absence of that procedure and has faced stress.

--the perception of Marvin about Carol should change and should be willing to share the heavy work of Carol and can provide quality of care to patients.

--The nurse staff performace should be evaluated and manager should have friendly conversations rarely to get to know any chance of workplace violance happening or not.

--The manager should train the new staff how to face the workplace violance and how to resolve them and increase the awareness in them.It helps in the reduction of violance situations in the nursing station.
