You find your postoperative patient lying on the floor bleeding profusely from his groin wound. After calling for help and applying pressure to the groin, VS are taken. BP is 85/50. His previous BP was 120/80. He is awake enough to tell you he feels faint. What do you expect to find regarding the following assessments?

  • Heart rate: Increased or decreased heart rate?
  • Pulse volume/strength: Normal, thready, or bounding?
  • Skin assessment?
  • Could his level of consciousness or respiratory rate be affected?

*heart rate increases, irregular tachyarrhythmias

*pulse- pulse rate increase and pulse volume decreased - thready

*skin-cool and clammy

*person would be lethargic and has altered level of consciousness.

*respiratory rate-rapid, shallow respiration,crackles. also resp acidosis is seen

*changes might be occuring as the patient might be suffereing from a hypovolemic shock(since there is bleeding) and its in the progressive stage of shock.(blood pressure is falling)
