Metabolic alkalosis is a condition in which the blood become
overly alkaline.
Metabolic alkalosis mainly occurs due to :-
• Excess loss of hydrogen ion-
Due to excessive vomiting, or prolonged gastric aspiration
• Increased bicarbonates-
Increased bicarbonates in extra cellular compartment happens due to
more enteral intake of alkali or bicarbonate.
• Diuretic induced-
Diuretics which blocks sodium and chloride reabsorption which will
lead to more absorption of bicarbonates in proximal tubule causes
increased serum bicarbonates level.
Metabolic alkalosis will cause systemic complications like-
• Central Nerve System –
Coma
agitation
Confusion
• Peripheral Nerve System-
Tremor
Tingling sensation
Numbness
Weakness of muscles
