Nutrition: It is the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the relationship between diet, health, and disease.

Nutrition also focuses on how people can use dietary choices to reduce the risk of disease, what happens if a person has too much or too little of a nutrient, and how allergies work.

There are six types of nutrients essential for survival: proteins, carbohydrates, lipids (fats), vitamins, minerals and water that are essential components of foodstuffs that are put to one of three uses such as

1. Energy

2. Growth and repair

3. Maintaining healthy metabolic function.

Importance of nutrition:

Nutrients provide nourishment. Proteins, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water are all nutrients. If people do not have the right balance of nutrients in their diet, their risk of developing certain health conditions increases.

Nutrition Standards: A collective term for the nutrition goals for meals that include recommended nutrients and other dietary components in specified amout that are required for well being and good health.

Basic balanced meal: A meal or diet that consisting of the proper quantities and proportions of foods (nutrients) needed to maintain health or growth. Eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportions, and consuming the right amount of food and drink to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.

Preparation of basic balanced meal: Each meal is a building block in your healthy eating style. Balanced meal includes all the food groups throughout the day such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein foods part of your daily meals and snacks.

Sample balance meal:

In a balanced deit, we should follow 40%, 40%, 20% rule of carbohydrates, proteins and fats respectively. Here some of the balanced meal food stuffs listed.

• Eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day
• Base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
• Have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
• Eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein
• Choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts
