Snake in SWEAT is the representation of evil and malevolence

Delia is afraid of snakes and her husband sykes uses this advantage. Sykes uses snake and snake like objects to frighten her. Snake could be a symbol that shows skyes cruelty and evil mind.

How ever the snake is also connected with the Christian themes. Snake is associated with temptation. Sykes is tempted by the snake to get rid of his wife Delia, like the way snake tempt Adam and Eve to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil in Bible . Behaviour of sykes is very abusive and shows a sinful nature.

There fore snake symbolize cruelty, temptation, evil and sin.
