Pytochemicals can be defined as a group of chemical compounds
that are produced by plants, mainly to thrive or thwart
competitors, predators, or pathogens away.
The types of phytochemicals are as follows:
- Carotenoids : Carotenoids are present in foods such as carrots,
pumpkins, mangoes, apricots tomatoes. They basically serve the
finction of protecting the body cells such as fat cells from free
radicals thus preventing cancer.
- Flavonoids : Flavonoids are found in foods such as apples,
blueberries, cherries, broccolis, strawberries etc. They servesthe
function of preventing inflammation and prevent platelets from
adhesion. Thus it helps to regulate blood pressure.
- Ellagic acid : Ellagic acid is found in foods such as red
grapes, strawberries, black berries, bluebberries, kiwi fruit. It
prevents arterial inflammation thus preventing arterial
diseases.
