Write the word root and connecting vowel for the following terms: adenoids, artery, and thrombus
Medical terminology is composed of prefix , root term and suffix
Word root is the foundation of a word. Adding vowel a, e,I, o, u or y to a word root creates a combining form. This allow two or more word roots to form a compound word. Vowel makes the word easier to pronounce. Do not use vowels if suffix starts with vowel
The common combining vowel is I or O
Adenoids- word root is adenoid and the combining vowel is O ( combining form : adenoid/O )
Eg adenoid/itis, here I is already a vowel so need of extra vowel
Artery- word root is arteri or arter and the combining vowel is O ( combining form :arter/o or artery/o)
Eg : arteri/o/sclerosis
Thrombus : word root is thromb and connecting vowel is O ( combining form: thromb/o )
Eg :thromb/o/lysis
