Every nurse is not aware of sociology before studying it during his/her study.

But the knowledge of sociology is important same as that of other sciences in nursing, in order to provide quality care & effective care to the patients. And also in absence of social worker the nurse has to interact with the family so the nurse should have good knowledge of sociology.

Following are some of the main points by which socialogy is contributing to the nursing profession :

  1. It provides knowledge about the culture, habits, norms, religious beliefs & behavior, that helps a nurse to learn how to deal with the patient effectively.
  2. It gives knowledge about the different sections of society.
  3. By the knowledge of sociology nurse gets idea that socio-cultural life of patient is important for planning & implementation of interventions.
  4. Sociology makes the assessment of patient easy.
  5. Social causes of various disease are known by the help of sociology.
  6. Sociology gives knowledge to nurse regarding the social environment, community which he is interested in & live in, the way person's life, social actions & connections.
