An angry patient scenario is quite common in health care setting. Patient might be angry because of the pain and suffering caused by underlying disease. For example, I had a patient with chronic renal failure, he would come to emergency room every alternative days and doctors would order blood studies prior to dialysis and this makes him so angry and he would refuse it.
For calming down an angry patient, as a nurse we should be empathetic to them, and don't feel bad to apologise them ,apologising doesn't always mean we are not right rather it means we are acknowledging patient's emotions.Let the patient ventilate their concerns and this can be facilitated only by maintaining a good rapport with the patient.Help them to find solutions accordingly.
