Salmonellosis is an infection with a bacteria called Salmonella.

Characteristics:

Salmonellosis is caused by salmonella which is  a rod-shaped (bacillus) Gram-negative rod shaped bacilli . Salmonella is non-spore-forming,motile enterobacteria with cell diameters between about 0.7 and 1.5 μm, lengths from 2 to 5 μm, and peritrichous flagella (all around the cell body).

Transmission:

  • transmission is person to person vai faceooral route

Food borne transmission occurs with raw and undercooked eggs and egg products.

Foods linked with salmonellosis are:

  • meat and poultry products,raw or undercooked eggs
  • diary products
  • green leafy vegetables,fresh vegetables
  • nut spreads
  • pet foods

Common symptoms:

  • abdominal cramps
  • fever
  • nause
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • blood in stool
  • headache and chills

Treatment:

  • Antidiarrhoeals like loperamide
  • Antibiotics

Preventive measures:

  • Handwashing
  • Unpasteurised foods to be avoided
  • Food preparation areas to be kept clean
  • Avoid eating raw or undercooked foods
  • Foods to be refrigerated properly.
