Explain the difference between prelingual and postlingual hearing loss. How does this change how the hearing loss affects the person’s life? (Write 2-3 sentences maximum.)
The deafness that develops after the acquisition of speech and language is termed post-lingual it usually develops after the age of six. This type hearing impairment is far less common than prelingual deafness which develops before the acquisition of speech and language. A prelingual deaf individual is someone who is born with a hearing loss, or who develops hearing loss before the child speaks his or her first words. The prelingual deafness is associated with a speech loss as well, while the postlingual may not be associated with speech loss. Thus depending upon the type of hearing loss a person may or may not be able to speak.
