Autonomic dysreflexia is a condition in which there is a sudden
onset of high blood presure.This is most common in patient with
spinal cord injuries that involve thoracic nerves of the spine or
above( T6 and above).
Interprofessional care for Autonomic dysreflexia:
- Elevate the head to 90 degrees immediately and legs has to be
plalced in dependant position to lower blood pressure
- Loosen constrictive clothing,abdominal binders etc
- Catheterize the patient with intermittent urinary
catheterization immediately
- Check and flush the urinary catheter immediately if
obstructed
- If stool present disimpact the lower bowel after anesthetizing
with a topical spray
- Monitor blood pressure every 2 -3 minutes and vital signs every
5 minutes.
- Administer blood pressure lowering drugs if needed
- Educate patient and family to prevent autonomic dysreflexia and
comfort measures
