The centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is a part of the U.S department of health and human services. The CMS has the primary responsibility for the health insurance program. The CMS works in partnership with the state governments to administer the Medicare and Medicaid services.

The responsibility of CMS involves the development of policies, guidelines and procedures used by the intermediaries, carriers and carry out administration of the health insurance provisions of the social security act.
