You are caring for a 30-year-old female patient going into surgery for a cholecystectomy. The patient will receive general anesthesia. Outline the preoperative and postoperative needs of the patient related to the general anesthesia.
Preoperative patients must have labs checked, vital signs taken and must be NPO for a selected number of hours prior to the surgery. If there is any indication of a problem, it can be fatal for a patient to go into surgery and the physicians must be notified.
Postoperative patients must be constantly monitored because the CNS depression can cause respirstory arrest, cardiovascular reactions including hypotension, and alterations in GI activity that can lead to nausea and vomiting.
