an i tubated patient has propofol ordered at 25mcg/kg/min. the concentration of protocol is 10 mg/ml.the patient weight is 50kg. how many millimeters per hour should the iv pump be programmed for?
Given,
Ordered: propofol 25 mcg/kg/min
Patient weight= 50 kg
Overall Dose for patient= ordered dose × patient weight
=25 mcg/kg/min × 50 kg
= 1250 mcg/min
Now, concentration of propofol = 10 mg/ml
Now, 1 mg =1000 mcg(micrograms)
10 mg = 1000×10 mcg
=10000 mcg
So, concentration of propofol = 10000 mcg/ml
It means 10000 mcg propofol present in 1 ml
Using unitary method:-
10000 mcg propofol present in 1 ml
1 mcg propofol present in= 1/10000 ml
1250 mcg propofol present in =(1/10000)×1250 ml
=0.125 ml
So, overall dose = 0.125 ml/min
= 0.125 ml/min × 60 min/hr
=7.5 ml/hr
Therefore, the iv pump should be programmed for 7.5 ml per hour
