Compare bottom-up to top-down modeling What is the best approach to arrive at an effective data model?
In the current scenario, the amount of data generated in various
areas of work is enormous. Be it consumer goods, medical field,
factories, or any other type of setup. Hence, there should be
intelligent ways of handling the data. Data models provide a proper
way to handle the data which includes representing the data,
establishing relationships with other data, setting rules of
engagement for processing the data, etc. There are two ways to
approach data modeling- Top-down approach and a bottom-up
approach.
The top-down approach starts with an initial idea or belief and the
data is further arranged down the line. This approach is
module-based and sub-modules are defined later. The benefit is that
this approach focuses on an initial problem and provides
resolution.
The bottom-up approach starts with representing all the data and
finds relations, patterns in it. This initiates with solving a
problem and then building the available data around it so as to
generalize the issue.
Both approaches have their own advantages and disadvantages. Hence,
the use of the data modeling method should be used accordingly. For
example, if one has to study the vast data and lead to a conclusion
by narrowing down the approach, the bottom-up approach may be
suitable. It is helpful in exploring the data and coming out with
meaningful results. On the other hand, if one has an issue or task
at hand, the data can be channeled and arranged suitably to study
the trend or modality and further use the model at other places. In
many situations, both approaches can also be used one over the
other.
