Why are not all beta-blockers indicated in the treatment of heart failure?

Answer #1

Beta blockers are drugs which are used in treatment of heart failure. It helps in improving the function of the heart by proper relaxation of heart muscles thereby decreasing the heart rate along with preventing the release of harmful substances that is released during heart failure.

But not all the beta blockers are used in treatment of heart failure. FDA has approved only 3 beta blockers to be used in treatment of heart failure. They are ----- Metoprolol, Carvedilol, Bisoprolol .

Certain beta blockers like Propranolol are not recommended for heart failure because of their negative ionotropic characteristics which weakens the heart contractions and slows down the heart rate and hence not a suitable drug choice for heart failure.

Thank you.
