A)Indications of bladder lavage :

  • Hygienic care of bed ridden patients
  • Bladder spasm , infections and bleeding
  • Acute urinary retention
  • Mucous and debris in bladder
  • Intermittent compression of neurogenic bladder
  • Hydronephrosis in chronic obstruction

B)Procedure :

  • A catheter is introduced into the bladder
  • 50 to 60 ml of saline is pushed by a syringe into the bladder through the catheter
  • Then the saline is removed by pulling back with the syringe
  • Continue the irrigation of bladder until the saline comes out clearly or without any mucous or debris

C)Nursing care during the procedure:

  • Procedure done under strict aseptic conditions
  • Hands should be washed thoroughly and wear gloves
  • The saline should be pushed gently into the bladder
  • Don't overpull or pull back the saline forcefully
  • After completing the procedure wash hands thoroughly
